Description and Aim
Olympic sports have become quantitative science, for example, a tiny improvement in efficiency or stroke execution in swimming can make the difference between a gold medal, or no medal at all. A physics approach may help, and vice-versa, sports themes may lead to exciting science. Starting from introductory lectures on the basic mechanics, physics, and physiology background of sports we will focus on themes, such as swimming, rowing, and cycling. An important theme is para sports (paralympics), as it challenges us to rethink the relation between physics and physiology. These focus sessions will be initiated by sports professionals. This helps identify themes and inspire collaboration. The ultimate aim of the workshop is to establish a research agenda on the physics of sports.
