Transformations in Statistical Mechanics: Pathologies and Remedies

10 - 14 October 2016

Venue: Snellius

If you are invited or already registered for this workshop, you have received login details by email.

Aim and description of the workshop Understanding how the macroscopic laws of physics emerge from the microscopic motion of colliding particles is the subject of statistical mechanics. For equilibrium systems the tool to go from micro to macro is the Boltzmann-Gibbs distribution. For non-equilbrium systems no such general tool is available, and the foundations are still largely under construction. Mathematical statistical mechanics is an active area of research that deals with the mathematical formalisation of thermodynamics.

In this workshop we want to highlight several aspects and challenges of the Gibbs formalism, and discuss its possible generalisations and limitations.

Core topics of the workshop are:

1. Transformation of Gibbs measures and dynamical Gibbs-non-Gibbs transitions 2. Disordered systems and quasicrystals 3. Cluster expansions in classical and quantum context 4. g-measures and processes with long memory
