Towards reporting criteria for observational communication coding

6 - 8 February 2023

Venue: Lorentz Center@Snellius

If you are invited or already registered for this workshop, you have received login details by email.

The aim of this workshop is to set an interdisciplinary standard for future work involving observational coding of synchronous human-human interaction. To that end, we will:

  • develop potential guidelines and quality criteria for reporting about the development and use of observational coding measures;
  • prioritize and determine a final set of guidelines and criteria;
  • describe these guidelines and criteria in a collaborative publication, to be submitted for publication in an open-access peer-reviewed journal, and to be dispersed within our respective disciplinary fields through additional publications; and
  • explore the preferred format, and devise an action plan for a (bi)annual international meeting on observational coding.

This workshop will be considered a success if we: (1) reach consensus on the key quality and reporting criteria for observational coding tools; (2) have submitted a scientific publication reporting about these criteria within one year of the workshop, to which all attendees have had the opportunity to contribute as co-author; and (3) have established long-term cross-disciplinary collaboration on this methodology, e.g., in the form of a recurring international meeting or a methodological online peer support platform.
