Scholars within the field of argumentation studies use a great variety of qualitative methods to study the way in which people argue to convince others of the acceptability of their standpoints, While many of these methods are well-developed, they have originated in a number of disciplines. To strengthen the study of argumentation, it is important to develop an integrative set of guidelines, instruments and recommendations to deal comprehensively with naturally occurring argumentation. The goal of this workshop is to develop comprehensive conceptualizations and explanations of the core principles of qualitative research in the field. The objective of bringing together specialists in qualitative research is to start these discussions, make explicit our methodological foundations, and ultimately work towards a handbook on this neglected topic.
