The workshop will examine how question-answering machines (QAMs) like ChatGPT can aid scientific understanding, as well as whether these QAMs themselves can possess artificial understanding. It will bring together experts in machine learning, philosophy of science, and physics to address issues around human understanding with QAMs and possible artificial understanding by QAMs. Through interactive sessions, the aim is to build an interdisciplinary research community and draft a "white paper" laying out key findings and a roadmap for future collaboration on artificial scientific understanding in physics. The workshop will use physics as a case study for exploring the implications of QAMs for the notion of scientific understanding.
