The Dutch chemistry sector is a critical driver of innovation, addressing global challenges such as energy transitions, health advancements, and materials science. However, the field faces increasing pressure from reduced government funding and changing legislation, which threaten its international competitiveness. Retaining and nurturing the next generation of leaders is essential for ensuring the sustainability and innovation of the sector. This Lorentz Workshop ‘Next Generation Leaders in Dutch Chemistry’ aims to equip early-career chemists / Young PI’s with the strategic leadership skills necessary to ensure the continued growth and global competitiveness of the Dutch chemistry community.
This exclusive, invitation-only workshop is tailored for emerging chemistry leaders based in the Netherlands, welcoming both native and international young professionals. It will strengthen participants' leadership abilities, foster connections, and encourage interdisciplinary collaborations to fuel innovation. Through mentorship, networking, and hands-on training, this workshop will provide young PIs with the tools and support they need to succeed and lead in a rapidly evolving landscape.
During the workshop, participants will:
• Navigate the Dutch chemical research landscape, understanding its unique opportunities and challenges, and developing strategies to thrive within it.
• Cultivate a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for themselves and their research teams, focusing on building both a positive social and scientific culture.
• Develop strategies for effective collaboration in consortia, and learning how to influence key policymakers and stakeholders, including representatives from the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW), NWO, and the Chemistry Council, to advocate for the chemistry sector's priorities.
This workshop is a critical step towards establishing a bi-annual workshop, fostering an interconnected community of talented leaders who will shape the future of chemistry in the Netherlands. By strengthening leadership skills and promoting collaborative networks, the workshop aims to increase retention of talent and ensure the sector’s long-term sustainability, driving impactful advancements for society.
Through a combination of scientific discussions, leadership training, and networking opportunities, participants will not only enhance their professional skills but also contribute to building a more dynamic, globally influential chemistry community in the Netherlands.
