An explanation has long been sought for the apparent dominance of matter over antimatter in the universe. In a groundbreaking paper, published 50 years ago, Sakharov proposed that the asymmetry is due to particle physics in the early universe, and he characterized the ingredients required for baryogenesis: Not only must sufficient B and CP violation exist to make baryogenesis possible, but also departure from thermal equilibrium during a relevant period of the universe's history. It is generally believed that physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics is required for a successful scenario of baryogenesis.
The goal of our workshop is to tie together the recent progress in and prospects for understanding in particular the symmetry-breaking aspects of the Sakharov criteria. We invite leading figures in the cosmological aspects of various baryogenesis scenarios, the phenomenology of relevant low- and high-energy experiments, experimentalists that test the Sakharov conditions, and QCD experts focusing on matrix elements that are crucial for the interpretation of low-energy experiments. As one of our main goals is to bring these communities together we aim at a workshop with relatively few talks and ample time for discussions and setting up collaborations.
