Life Sciences meets Physics with Industry 2021

8 - 12 November 2021

Venue: Lorentz Center@Snellius

If you are invited or already registered for this workshop, you have received login details by email.

Since 2013, the Lorentz Center has been organizing the Life Sciences with Industry workshop together with NWO.

The workshop is intended to encourage cooperation and exchange of knowledge between academia and industry. Scientists and researchers from both academia and industry work closely together for one week to find original solutions to challenging industrial problems.

Are you a young scientist with a background in the physics, bio-physics, life-sciences or a related research field and do you have a creative and inquisitive mind? Do you like to think outside-the-box? Do you want to meet new people from different disciplines? If yes, apply now for the first ‘Life Sciences meets Physics with Industry’ workshop.

This workshop introduces young researchers to industrial research. For a whole week they work in a team on a real company issue. Participants are mostly PhD students or postdocs. In addition, a senior researcher is assigned to each team, to ensure progress and scientific quality.

This workshop builds up on the successful Life Sciences with Industry and Physics with Industry workshops that have been successfully taken place for seven and ten times, respectively.

Young researchers gain new insights into life sciences and physics-related problems from companies and the industrial R&D approach, but also expand their network, and experience working in a refreshingly different format, based on a team and a mission.

The participating companies benefit from the academic input, gaining new ideas and contacts. Please see the company cases under the "Workshop Files" of this page.

The Bejo Zaden case “Non-destructive 3D-volumetric measurements of small objects” is a physics case. The aim is to have a group of 4-5 physicists and 1-2 biologists working on this case. The case “Super-pangenomes for breeding even better vegetables” is a purely biology related case, only researchers with a background in life science or bio-physics will be permitted for this case. The VITO case “Personal Genome Pods” is open to both life sciences as well as physics researchers.

Last but not least, the workshop is famous for the enthusiastic vibe of its participants and is a fun week for everyone involved.

If you are interested in working on purely physics cases, please also have a look at the Physics with Industry workshop.

Deadline for application is October 14th.

In October we will let you know whether your application has been accepted.

Participants are expected to be present at the Lorentz Center throughout the workshop.

Please confirm that you have approval of your supervisor to apply. After selection we will require a written confirmation of your participation, which  needs to be signed by your supervisor and a signed NDA.
