Together with Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, the Lorentz Center organizes the public lecture ‘The richness of multilingualism’. It will be given by Pieter Muysken en Gerrit Jan Kootstra from Radboud University Nijmegen.

The richness of multilingualism

In many families people speak more than one language. In the Netherlands, next to Dutch, Frisian and Limburgian, people speak Turkish, English, Berber, Papiamento, and Sranan. This multilingual hotspot leads to all sorts of interesting situations, such as multilingual street scenes and people who mix their languages: code-switching. How common is it to hear younger Turkish Dutch speak a mixture of Turkish and Dutch, or businessmen who mix English and Dutch?

At the same time, multilingualism is surrounded by myths. For example that mixing languages indicates a lack of language skills. Or that it is better to learn one language while growing up. Pieter Muysken and Gerrit Jan Kootstra will discuss these myths and will try to separate fact from fiction, in the light of the results of research in multilingual situations around the world, with young and old and in all sorts of social groups.

The public lecture by Pieter Muysken and Gerrit Jan Kootstra is part of the Lorentz Center workshop ‘Key Debates in Code-Switching Research: Methodological and Theoretical Considerations’, which will take place in Leiden on 15 to 19 January 2018. This workshop will combine expertise in linguistic and psycholinguistic approaches and methods to generate fundamental new insights and a more complete understanding of code-switching.

Museum Boerhaave organiseert in samenwerking met het Lorentz Center een publiekslezing onder de titel ‘Key Debates.’ De lezing wordt gegeven door Pieter Muysken en Gerrit Jan Kootstra from Radboud University Nijmegen.

Key Debates

In veel gezinnen staan mensen op en gaan ze naar bed met meer dan één taal. Naast het Nederlands hebben we in ons land Fries en Limburgs, maar ook Turks, Engels, Berbers, Sranan, Papiamento en zo kun je doorgaan. Die meertalige hotspot leidt tot allerlei interessante situaties, zoals meertalige straatbeelden en mensen die hun talen mixen: code-switching. Hoe vaak hoor je niet jongere Turkse Nederlanders Turks en Nederlands door elkaar gebruiken, of ondernemers Engels en Nederlands?

Tegelijk is meertaligheid omgeven door mythes. Bijvoorbeeld dat taalmixen duidt op gebrekkige taalvaardigheid. Of dat je maar beter met één taal kunt opgroeien. In hun lezing gaan taalkundigen Pieter Muysken en Gerrit Jan Kootstra in op deze mythes en proberen ze feiten van fictie te scheiden. Dit aan de hand van de resultaten van onderzoek in meertalige situaties over de hele wereld, bij jong en oud en binnen allerlei lagen van de bevolking.

De publiekslezing van Pieter Muysken en Gerrit Jan Kootstra is onderdeel van de Lorentz Center workshop ‘Key Debates in Code-Switching Research: Methodological and Theoretical Considerations’, welke van 15 tot 19 januari 2018 plaatsvindt.
