Together with Rijksmuseum Boerhaave, the Lorentz Center organizes the public lecture ‘Fairness and Accountability of Sociotechnical Algorithmic Systems’. It will be given by danah boyd from New York. She is a Microsoft researcher and founder of the research institute Data & Society.

Fairness and Accountability of Sociotechnical Algorithmic Systems

Data-driven and algorithmic systems increasingly underpin many decision-making systems, shaping where law enforcement are stationed and what news you are shown on social media. The design of these systems is inscribed with organizational and cultural values. Often, these systems depend on the behavior of everyday people, who may not act as expected.

Cultural and personal biases often invade the data sets upon which systems are trained or infect the feedback loops that are critical for the systems to evolve. At the same time, adversarial actors also seek to manipulate the data upon which these systems are built for personal, political, and economic reasons.

The public lecture by dana boyd (she spells her name without capitals) is part of the Lorentz Center workshop ‘Intersectionality and Algorithmic Discrimination: Intersecting Disciplinary Perspectives’, which will take place in Leiden on 18 tot 22 December 2017. This workshop aims to bring together the algorithmic discrimination and intersectionality communities to think about intersectionality and algorithmic discrimination in one go. They will address the complexity of the intersecting power systems in society, how these are encoded in algorithmic decisions and explore ways to deal with this.

Museum Boerhaave organiseert in samenwerking met het Lorentz Center een publiekslezing onder de titel ‘Fairness and Accountability of Sociotechnical Algorithmic Systems’. De lezing wordt gegeven door Microsoft-onderzoeker danah boyd. Zij spreekt over algoritmes die eerlijk met data omgaan dan wel die data manipuleren. De lezing is om 17:00 uur in de Einsteinzaal van het pas vernieuwde Rijksmuseum Boerhaave en is vrij toegankelijk.

Sociale technologie voor big data en kunstmatige intelligentie

Steeds vaker komen beslissingen tot stand op basis van algoritmes: geautomatiseerde reeksen  instructies, gevoed met data. Zo’n algoritme bepaalt waar een politiebureau moet komen, of welk nieuws je op sociale media krijgt voorgeschoteld. Maar hoe eerlijk zijn die data? Zijn in het ontwerp van zulke systemen geen culturele of persoonlijke vooroordelen ingebakken? Hebben politieke of economische belangen een rol gespeeld bij het selecteren van data? In haar lezing zal danah boyd (die haar naam zonder hoofdletters spelt en oprichter en president is van het onderzoekcentrum Data & Society in New York) aan de hand van een reeks kwesties het maatschappelijk belang van eerlijke, controleerbare  procedures benadrukken.

De publiekslezing van dana boyd is onderdeel van de Lorentz Center workshop ‘Intersectionality and Algorithmic Discrimination: Intersecting Disciplinary Perspectives’, welke van 18 tot 22 december  2017 plaatsvindt. Specialisten op het gebied van computerwetenschap, kunstmatige intelligentie, sociologie, media studies, wetenschap- en technologiestudies, recht en ethiek buigen zich over de manier waarop verschillende soorten discriminatie zich in en via algoritmes kunnen manifesteren in het maatschappelijk verkeer. In het bijzonder bekijkt deze workshop dit vraagstuk vanuit het uitgangspunt dat een identiteit altijd meerdere dimensies tegelijk omvat (ras, geslacht, leeftijd etc.), hetgeen leidt tot subtiele mechanismen van inclusie en exclusie die vaak onvoldoende herkend worden.
