Environmental Dispersion Processes

The workshop Environmental Dispersion Processes focuses on the development and analysis of mathematical models and simulation strategies directed toward the understanding of turbulent transport of gases, small particles or of heat. This is essential in various situations such as sediment-transport in rivers and coastal areas, spreading of pollutants, dust and soot in urban environments or the heat- and mass-transfer across the ocean-surface, with direct connections to weather and climate predictions. A systematic and fundamental approach requires input and integration from a variety of scientific and engineering disciplines. This includes topics from civil and mechanical engineering, mathematical and geophysical modeling, meteorology, hydrology and oceanography. The proposed workshop aims to bring together scientists from various disciplines and provide a platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas in the field of multiscale modeling and simulation of large-scale problems in enviromental fluid mechanics. In addition, the participating national and international experts will provide special presentation-sessions which will include educational elements for PhDs and postdocs. The workshop will focus on two themes: * Fundamental understanding of turbulent dispersion in particle-laden flows.  * Dispersion processes in human environments In these directions new confrontation of theoretical and simulation models with experimental data is possible, e.g., by making use of modern satellite observations or, on a laboratory scale, non-intrusive field observations based on laser-diagnostics. During the 10 day workshop attention will be given (i) to fundamental aspects of dispersion in modulated turbulence, (ii) to more applied elements related to sediment, pollutant and heat-/mass transport, and (iii) to educational aspects.
