Communicating the science of adversity

19 - 23 May 2025

Venue: Lorentz Center@Snellius

The aim of the workshop is to create science communication products (e.g., infographics, animations, fact sheets) that promote a well-rounded view of people living in adverse environments (e.g., due to neglect, abuse, poverty).  For decades, science communication has focused on vulnerabilities and deficits, without recognizing people’s strengths and strategies. There is an urgent need for products that promote a well-rounded view. Some of our products will highlight recent research findings. Others will help to prevent misinterpretation or even misuse of these findings (e.g., if people develop strengths or strategies, this does not mean there is nothing wrong with living with adversity!). In general, the better we understand how people adjust to adverse environments, the more effectively we can tailor policies and interventions to suit the needs and potentials of those affected. This workshop will connect Dutch and international scientists, policymakers, and journalists.
