Logic, Language and Market

Boerhaave Museum organizes in collaboration with the Lorentz Center a public lecture entitled 'Logic, Language and Market'. Speakers include Michael Moortgat, professor of Language Science at Utrecht University, and Nachoem Wijnberg, professor of Cultural Entrepreneurship at the University of Amsterdam. The public lecture is part of the logic workshop 'Unified Correspondence', which takes place during the week at the Lorentz Center.

How does a stream of sound patterns become significant? What drives the options trading? At first glance, these questions from linguistics and economics seem to have little in common. But as much as the underlying disciplines may seemingly differ from each other, there are surprising parallels from the viewpoint of logic.

Logic is the science that deals with sound reasoning. But whether an argument is valid depends a lot on the subject of the reasoning. To address this problem, conceptual frameworks have been developed, so called 'classes', which can manage the dynamics of a changing world. As far back as antiquity, classes have provided a powerful tool to contain the world. And modern logic also knows how to appreciate classes. Moortgat and Wijnberg will illustrate, each from their own background, the value of catchy categories for - with a wink to Jorge Luis Borges - 'The heavenly emporium of benevolent knowledge'.

Logica, taal en markt

Museum Boerhaave organiseert in samenwerking met het Lorentz Center een publiekslezing onder de titel ‘Logica, Taal en Markt’. Sprekers zijn Michael Moortgat, hoogleraar taalinformatica aan de Universiteit Utrecht, en Nachoem Wijnberg, hoogleraar cultureel ondernemerschap aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam. De publiekslezing maakt deel uit van de logica-workshop ‘Unified Correspondence’, welke tijdens de week plaats vindt op het Lorentz Center.

Hoe krijgt een stroom geluidspatronen betekenis? Wat stuurt de handel in opties? Deze vragen uit de taalkunde en de economische wetenschap lijken op het eerste gezicht weinig gemeen te hebben. Maar hoezeer de achterliggende vakgebieden ook van elkaar mogen verschillen, uit oogpunt van de logica zijn er verrassende parallellen.

Logica is de wetenschap die zich bezighoudt met deugdelijk redeneren. Maar of een redenering valide is, hangt sterk af van waar die redenering op slaat, van het onderwerp dus. Om dit probleem het hoofd te bieden zijn er begrippenkaders ontwikkeld, ‘categorieën’ gedoopt, die met de dynamiek van een veranderende wereld uit de voeten kunnen. Al sinds de Oudheid bieden categorieën een krachtig hulpmiddel om de wereld te bevatten. Ook moderne logica weet ze op waarde te schatten. Moortgat en Wijnberg illustreren, ieder vanuit hun vakgebied, de waarde van catchy categories voor – met een knipoog naar Jorge Luis Borges – ‘Het hemelse emporium [verzameling] van welwillende kennis’.
