What is the Dark Matter?

Carlos Frenk

Durham University

ABSTRACT: There is compelling astrophysical evidence that most of the gravitating matter in the Universe is dark, from the pattern of hot and cold spots seen in the relic radiation from the Big Bang to the dynamics of galaxies and galaxy clusters and the phenomenon of gravitational lensing. The dark matter is almost certainly an as-yet undiscovered elementary particle. I will discuss how astrophysical observations may reveal its identity.
